Holiday Fishes for the Tree

“Summer Home” Scene Inspired Christmas Ornament

Lynn is the Queen of Make a Scene card making! Her creativity is a continual source of inspiration and today’s Deep Sea Marlin Christmas ornament was totally inspired by Lynn’s “Summer Home – Let’s Make a Scene” card.

deep-sea-marlin-wood-ornament

Stamps to make this ornament: Deep Sea Marlin Multi-Step Clear Stamps, Holly & Mistletoe Multi-Step Clear Stampsand Norway Pine Multi-Step (Junkie-Fest 2018 Limited Edition) from Kitchen Sink Stamps.

Here is Lynn’s “Summer Home” card where she stamped the smaller marlin, (read more about her card on her blog) … and the source of inspiration! LAM LMS076 KSS

For my holiday ornament, first I cut out the shapes using SVG files and 80 lb white cardstock. Then stamped the large marlin and small holly & berries.

I planned on using pop-up dots to adhere the marlin and holly to a 3” to 3.5″ wood disk, 1/4 to 3/8″ thick, to give the ornament dimension. But because the marlin’s spear-like snout (or bill) is so thin, it was not possible to cut a pop dot (or foam tape) thin enough to fit under the “spear” portion without it showing. Therefore it would be left floating above the wood. I had a concern that the ” floating spear” would tear off or get bent if the card stock didn’t have extra support. To fix the problem, I glued the marlin onto a sheet a thin cardboard and fussy cut off the excess cardboard. This made the “spear” portion and the tail fin stronger and sturdier. Then I inked the edges to camouflage the cardboard base.

The finishing touch, (shows better in the top photo) the sparkly highlights were added using a clear Wink of Stella pen on the dark teal, and black areas of the marlin and the holly and berries.

The sentiment was stamped directly on the wood disk. Then adhered the marlin & holly to the wood using black pop-dots.

There you have it … “Fishing you a Merry Christmas!” deep-sea-marlin-wood-ornament2

[UPDATE – 9/10/18]  I created a second ornament. This time I coated the marlin and berries with Mod Podge Dimensional Magic. I was trying to strengthen the long nose and tail fins of the marlin … which seems to be working. I like the extra shine and slightly raised effect the ModPodge gives the Marlin and the holly berries while letting the sparkle from the Wink of Stella glitter pen come through.

A Beary St. Patrick one minute …

… now a Beary St. Nick!    He’s a bear for many holidays!

Please don’t let the theme of this card imply that I have my seasons mixed up. I am attempting to get a jump start on my Christmas card making. I figure if I start now, I might be ready and have enough come late November … instead of my usual mailing my holiday cards AFTER Christmas! LOL!
